Abstract

The purpose of this article is to evaluate the current state of prevention and care of tuberculosis and
human immunodeficiency virus in penitentiary centers in the city of Cartagena. It is the product of a
mixed, descriptive study that included documentary research in its qualitative part, and in its quanti
tative component, a non-probabilistic convenience sample of 60 PPL was studied, who were surveyed
on aspects related to knowledge about : the disease, the care, the diagnosis, and the symptoms, etc.
The SPSS statistical program was used to process the data. It was established that after the COVID-19
pandemic, an increase in TB cases was observed in prisons, therapeutic success decreased by 50% in
2021, pointing to problems in treatment adherence. Misperceptions about TB, variability in the use
of preventive measures and limited knowledge about diagnosis were identified; some people do not
adequately perceive the risk of contracting TB.
